What is GST?
The Goods and Services Tax (GST) is a comprehensive, multi-stage, destination-based tax levied on the supply of goods and services across India. Introduced on 1st July 2017, GST replaced multiple indirect taxes such as VAT, CST, Service Tax, Excise Duty, and Octroi, consolidating them into a single tax system.
GST is charged at every stage of value addition in the supply chain, but the tax revenue is allocated to the state where the goods or services are consumed (destination-based tax). For example, if a product is manufactured in one state and consumed in another, the tax revenue goes to the consuming state.
Businesses with turnover below the prescribed limit (e.g., up to ₹1.5 crore for eligible businesses) may opt for the Composition Scheme and pay GST at a fixed rate, subject to conditions.
