Society Registration refers to the legal process of forming a non-profit organisation created by a group of individuals to promote charitable, cultural, educational, religious, scientific, or social objectives. A society is established to serve community interests and operate for non-commercial purposes.

In India, societies are registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860, which lays down the procedures for formation, governance, and operation. The primary objective of this Act is to provide a legal framework for organisations working toward the development of literature, science, fine arts, and charitable activities.

Society registration is commonly pursued for activities related to education, art, culture, religion, sports, music, and other community welfare initiatives.

Procedure to Register a Society

To register a society, a minimum of seven members is required. Registration is carried out by the concerned State Government authority or Registrar of Societies.

1. Name Selection

Choose a unique and acceptable name for the society. The name must not conflict with existing registered societies and should be approved by all founding members.

2. Preparation of Memorandum of Association (MOA)

The MOA defines the objectives, rules, and structure of the society. It must be signed and attested by all founding members and include details such as the name, registered office address, and aims of the society.

3. Filing of Application

Submit the application form along with a covering letter, duplicate copies of the MOA, address proof of the registered office, and a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the property owner.

4. Submission of Supporting Documents

Attach identity proofs, address proofs, and details of members. The objectives and operational framework of the society must be clearly stated in the MOA.

5. Preparation of Articles of Association (AOA)

The AOA contains internal rules and regulations, including governance procedures, appointment of auditors, dispute resolution mechanisms, and management structure.
