Startup India Recognition is granted by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
The Startup India action plan focuses on:

Simplifying Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) processes and faster patent examination

To qualify for DPIIT recognition, the entity must meet the following conditions:
The entity must not have completed more than 10 years from the date of incorporation.
The business must be incorporated as one of the following:
Private Limited Company
Limited Liability Partnership (LLP)
Registered Partnership Firm
The annual turnover must not exceed ₹100 crore in any financial year since incorporation.
The startup should not be formed by splitting up or reconstructing an existing business.
The entity must:
Work towards innovation, development, or improvement of products, processes, or services
Have a scalable business model
Demonstrate potential for employment generation or wealth creation
The applicant must first register the business as:
A Private Limited Company
A Limited Liability Partnership (LLP)
A Registered Partnership Firm
The business must register on the official Startup India Recognition portal to apply for DPIIT recognition.
Provide the following details while applying:
Entity details (nature, sector, industry, incorporation number, registration date)
Registered office address
Authorized representative details
Directors/partners details
Intellectual Property details (if any)
Funding details
Recognition or awards received
After examination of the application and supporting documents, DPIIT issues a unique Startup Recognition Number and Certificate of Recognition.
Once recognized, the startup becomes eligible for various benefits and incentives.
Recognized startups receive:
Up to 80% rebate on patent filing fees
Faster patent examination
Support for trademarks, copyrights, and designs
DPIIT-recognized startups enjoy:
Opportunity to list products on Government e-Marketplace (GeM)
Exemption from Earnest Money Deposit (EMD)
Relaxation in prior experience and turnover requirements for central government tenders
After obtaining DPIIT recognition:
Eligible startups can apply for tax exemption under Section 80-IAC of the Income Tax Act
They can apply for Angel Tax exemption
Eligible startups can claim income tax exemption for 3 consecutive financial years out of the first 10 years from incorporation (subject to approval and conditions)
